Acid Reflux Problems Symptoms Remedies
Acid Reflux Problems
Acid reflux problems – what are they? Do you remember the last time you went to your favorite Italian Restaurant? You ordered the veal parmesan with all that wonderful cheese, tomato sauce and garlic, and washed it down with a bottle of your favorite red wine. A couple hours later you got home and started to feel an ‘urping’ sensation, where your dinner kept rising back into your throat. As this kept happening over and over, it started to burn more and more – those are acid reflux problems!
Acid Reflux Problems And GERD
Acid reflux problems are a cause of GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is the abnormal ‘backing up’ of the liquid in the stomach into the esophagus. Considering that your stomach is producing strong acids and gastric juices used for digestion, this can result in a very painful burning sensation. And over time, if left untreated, this can lead to serious problems as this can cause inflammation and damage to the lining in the esophagus.
The reflux occurs as a result of a valve at the entrance of the stomach, the lower esophageal sphincter or LES, not functioning correctly. Typically this valve will close as soon as food goes through it. However, if the LES does not close all the way or opens too often, the acid in your stomach moves up into your esophagus, and thus causes that burning sensation commonly known as heartburn – those are acid reflux problems!

Acid reflux problems, and the resulting acid reflux symptoms, are something that most everyone has from time to time. However, this is usually inconsequential with no lasting effects or damage to the esophagus. But do note that this is a chronic condition, and if the problem becomes more frequent and more severe, it can be a serious. In some of the worst cases, this can lead to scarring of the esophagus and difficulty in swallowing, to even a risk of esophageal cancer.
The point is that you need to pay attention to your acid reflux problems if the symptoms persist and become worse – they aren’t simply going to go away untreated. And, after the esophagus has some healing after treatment, it would be anticipated that the acid reflux problems are going to return.
Acid Reflux Symptoms
Acid reflux symptoms that are most common are heartburn, or that burning sensation that moves up from your stomach into your chest or throat, along with regurgitation, and food and acid moving up into your throat or mouth. Additional reflux symptoms to watch for could include chest related pain, difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness – to even dental problems, or frequent food ‘getting caught in your throat from a narrowing of the esophagus.
Acid reflux problems affect most everyone at some time, but there are some people who are more likely to suffer from the symptoms. People who smoke, drink too much, or are obese would be included in this group. And also many women have symptoms when they are pregnant, and then find that the problem doesn’t persist after delivery.
Acid Reflux Remedies
Acid reflux remedies are available, and it is a good thing. The heartburn can be very painful, and come to the point where it is regarded as acid reflux disease and needs to be treated. Often times the acid reflux remedies are relatively simple by using prescription or over the counter medicines, and especially from a change in lifestyle and control of the things that you are doing that are causing the problems. For instance, in many cases the predominant reason for acid reflux is diet; there are certain foods that are known to bring on the symptoms, such as: alcohol, pepper, caffeine, garlic, red sauces, and citrus fruits. As you would decrease or eliminate eating foods like these, you could find that your heartburn will not be much of a problem
Along with a change in diet, there are a number of other things that can cause acid reflux disease and that can be changed. Other causes that can be controlled would include: overeating and especially lying down after eating, smoking, taking aspirin or ibuprofen, being overweight or obese, and eating close to bed time.
So, don’t ignore persistent and increasingly severe acid reflux problems, they aren’t going to magically go away by themselves. Start with a change in diet and lifestyle. But if this doesn’t doesn’t become a remedy for your acid reflux symptoms, then it is time to see your doctor for medicine, or for tests to determine the cause of the problem, and to advise other treatments.
